THE PAIN AND THE PASSION. 

An historical full length play by Sherry Ede.

A portrait of Richard Pearse, his passion to fly, and the pain and sacrifices along the way, set against the isolation of the South Island of New Zealand circa 1903.

Characters:  5m, 6f. Doubling possible, but minimum cast is 8. 
Set:  Three areas across the stage – C. a lighting space for outdoor scenes and stages L & R. Richard’s workshop, and his mother’s kitchen.
 

Synopsis:  the play is a loosely based around the book ‘Oh, for the Wings of a Moth’ by aviation historian  Geoff Rodcliffe but with extra material incorporated eg  references to Kate Shepherd. It begins and ends with a 1953 scene in the
Christchurch hospital where Richard Pearse ended his days.  The main storyline of the play is Pearse as a young man working on his inventions and plane.   There are strong roles and opinions for the parents, particularly the mother. There is a romantic interest. 

Important props:  Two model planes a) a small replica (1m wing span), and a ¾ replica (3-4m wingspan).  Details on how these can be made available from the author.
