K.M. Henderson was born in Greenwich, London - ex WAAF. Lived in Bermuda 23 years, lived in NZ since 1970. Started writing plays before coming to NZ, based on life experiences, and has had plays performed in Christchurch and Napier. Writes poetry which has been published in Bermuda and local papers. |

Black Banner Day Performed by : Elmwood Players, May 1975.Drama, One Act. Characters : 9 F, 6 M. Setting : A department store in Bermuda in the late 1960s. View of the street outside. Props : Counters, with goods for sale, a couple or so of chairs. Synopsis : On the day of the annual Easter Floral Parade, a small incident erupts into a full-scale riot that affects the people employed in the story, both black and white, and changes their lives for ever. |

Rationalisation of Jobie Jones Prizewinning Play in : Playwrights Association of New Zealand competition 1980; subsequently performed in Napier. Drama. Estimated length : One-Act Characters : 3 f., 5 m. Setting : An office space, set in the future. Bare stage dominated by a circumscribed circle representing the top of a many-windowed observation tower. A large black window acts as a frame TV-style for the appearance of the other characters. Props : Sets of computer-type controls with many twinkling lights around the walls. The only other item of furniture is a swivel chair. Synopsis : The time is about 9.15 p.m. on a summer night; the sky gradually darkens as the action progresses. Jobie Jones is staring disconsolately as the scene begins. The staff is down to two and shortly to become one. Jobie, the man in the control tower, reviews his life and realises that ambition has not made him happy. |

Performed by : Avonside Girls High School. Prize winner in Playwrights Association competition 1979. Type of Play : Full length drama in two acts. Characters : 5 F, plus extras if available. Setting : A coastal barrage balloon site in the United Kingdom in about 1942. The stage represents a Nissen hut, the sleeping quarters of WWAFs. Several black iron beds, bare lights hanging down. A large door and a window at each end, with black-out curtains. The atmosphere is sterile and military. Props : Under each bed is a black wooden box with lift-up lid and lock. Small tables between the bed heads. A bare wooden table with benches in the centre. Synopsis : The two crews of young women in cold and comfortless conditions have to deal with petty military rules and rough, sometimes heartless situations, forcing them to face reality and grow up fast. |
